Greening your home is becoming an important criteria for many buyers looking to purchase a home in today's market. Homeowners are also more conscious about their impact on the environment and saving money.
I've recently acquired the certified designation" Green Property Advisor" and am moving on to complete more green training to assist my buyer's in their search for a green property and to assist my seller's in making some green changes to their home.
Here are some budget minded steps to begin the green process on your home:
1. Go low-flow on your showers heads and faucets aerators.
2. Buy fluorescent bulbs which will not only save energy, but money in the long run.
3. Make sure to wrap your water heater to save energy and money.
4. Buy antiques, reuse.
5. Buyer green energy appliances. Buy Energy Star. Also check into your local utility companies to find out if they offer alternative green energy sources.
6. A programmable thermostat will save you energy, money and will keep you from running the heat/cool air for long periods of time.
7. Your toilet could use a "tank bank", which is basically a plastic bottle with a valve that keeps some of the water in your tank from going out.
8. Use power strips to turn off your lights, computer, VCR and appliances when not in use.
9. Use green friendly detergents and cleaning supplies. There are many available. Another budget minded way to clean is just with plain water/vinegar.
10. Plant a tree.
